종교에 대한 기능적 definition 는 종교가 개인과 사회집단에 마주향하여 어떠한 기능을 담당하는가에 마주향하여 역점을 두고 논한다. 기어쯔는 “Religioon is (1) a system of symbols which acts to (2) establish powerful, pervasive, and long-lasting moods and motivations in men by (3) formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and (4) clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that (5) the moods and motivations seem uniquely realistic.` Clifford Geertz, Religion as a Culture System, in M.
